76 GEARY
AVE

Pre-pandemic, Geary Ave, a small 1.4 kilometre piece of pavement just north of Dupont wasn’t considered a conventionally good looking cultural hotspot. There were no photogenic murals worth Instagramming on this street, and architecture is distinctly warehouse-like. But over  the years it has become a breeding ground for new artistic endeavours and cultural experimentation. It is now a strip  where you're just as likely to find an auto body shop as you are a brewery, architecture firm, or artist studio, and in the case of 76A Geary, a rehearsal space that was unlike any other venue in the area.

Once boasting a top notch sound system that inspired an electric atmosphere, 76A thrived because it was multifaceted. Not only a live music space, but also as everyone’s favourite disco hovel draped in the finest metallic shimmery stuff and warm colours beamed forth from the world class state of the art neon 'party' sign one might find at Honest Ed’s. The parties here were all night affairs at the forefront of Toronto’s music scene revolution, that often made headlines for breaching Geary's zoning laws with its late night, sometimes rowdy, events. Yet somehow 76A "found the happy place" between neighbours, zoning laws, and law enforcement for the venue to thrive.
