THIRD
ATLANTIC
Third Atlantic is a Toronto-based independent art and music brand curated by myself with ongoing projects that include custom designed posters inspired by my love for collage and music subcultures. Influenced heavily by the advertising work of Tadanori Yokoo and the golden age album covers of Mati Klarwein and Pedro Bell I wanted to make pieces to own but could never find. They are self-contained, cross-disciplinary projects that are admittedly, brilliantly niche. I see collage as a powerful practice because it is a remarkable mode to distribute ideas and knowledge.
These posters and represent the legends of music and culture that have shaped my tastes, sounds, and attitudes. The mode of practise we created was designed to elevate these historical icon/artists in a very contemporary manner and by controlling the use of images, we are able to retain their ideas and meanings that are most important to us.

LARGE PRINT
Each of the limited edition prints are designed using a mixture of screen printing, photocopying and digital scans from photo, magazines, rare catalogues, video cassettes, and album cover archives. I spend hours going through these collections before finding new ways to incorporate them into the work and . then digitally manipulate images while trying out inspiring combinations of colours, textures, and patterns. Each project is then stamped with our own language; a completely original logotype that adds its own unique personality to the visuals.
I think heavily about the tangibility of each design I make i.e it’s gotta feel real. Before I release any thing to the public I ask myself: Is this something I can see putting up on my own walls or willing to wear in public. Is it something I can stare at for hours or wear for years and years? And finally how can it stand alone as its own piece of art.
They may appear to be busy, but the final product carefully reflects the source material. It is an expression how I see the artists and the world or space they have created. I attempt to embrace the idea of time and history through the layering of various images, that are at once immediate, chaotic, multilayered and surreal.
Our most important issue is how to keep each project cost efficient while making the art available to all. We do our best to apply the most environment friendly methods while retaining the highest quality possible. Most of our posters are 24” x 36” (71 x 92 cm) and 27” x 40” (68.58 x 101.6 cm). I chose these dimensions so that customers can easily find frames that match the sizes from local art supply stores at a low cost but they are also welcome to simply pin them on their walls.
They are UV printed on 100 Gloss Text, using an Oce Colorado 1640 Roll To Roll printer. This printer uses Greenguard Gold Certified Inks and will not fade even in direct sunlight. Products that have achieved Greenguard Certification are scientifically proven to meet some of the world’s most rigorous, third-party chemical emissions standards that help to reduce indoor air pollution and the risk of chemical exposure.
So how to we tell the world about this? We created a new e-commerce site that highlights our poster and t-shirt collections We first designed the website during the early years of the pandemic and then gave it a unique facelift in the winter of 2023 that mimics the cut and paste techniques used in our designs. Special care was given to the site’s mobile version with special attention towards creating a seamless shopping and checkout experience while animated banners add movement and alert visitors to new releases.
As well as posters for sale I also highlight a number of DJ mixes which represent the best of the past 5 years and a new monthly radio show called the “Third Broadcast” hosted by me under my DJ alias “Andycapp”. It is a chance to highlight new music not necessarily focused on dance floor hits but rather in an intimate fashion to connect with our listeners and fans. The website serves as a focal point for a community that has for years supported our events and radiates through our mixes and radio shows while the posters and t-shirts allow our loyal fans to take a piece of what we offer into their homes.
